The Power of Awe

Why Feeling Small is the Secret to Living Big

1. The Cure for the “9-to-5” Fog

We are suffocating in the shallow end of existence. Most of us mistake the “9-to-5” fog for the limits of the world, wandering through a repetitive cycle of survival that reduces life to mere bread and butter. We get bogged down in the petty, the mundane, and the frustrating, forgetting that we were built for something far more expansive. Awe is not a luxury for the dreamer; it is the oxygen for a soul that refuses to wither.

To truly live, you must learn to use the “ammo” of the soul: Awe. It is the energy required to blast out of pettiness and into a state of high-functioning sanity. Awe is the prerequisite for realizing your potential and the fuel that makes life “mind-boggling” rather than mediocre.

2. The Two Faces of Awe: From Hurricanes to Babbling Brooks Awe is a “transcendental pleasure” that shifts our internal wavelength. It is the moment the window of the world opens, and we are transported out of our usual selves. This experience generally takes two forms:

  • Power Awe: This is the overwhelming force of the elements that paralyzes us with its scale. It is the 50-foot wave crashing in a storm, the uprooted tree in a hurricane, or the realization that every star in the night sky is a raging sun. It makes our smallest concepts of power seem utterly insignificant.
  • Quiet Awe: This is the aesthetic experience of harmony and distance. It is the silence of a fresh snowfall, the ice-edged trees after a storm, or a baby’s laugh. Crucially, it is also the feeling of looking at the stars and being struck by the overwhelming distance and the smallness of man.

Both experiences serve the same purpose: they move us into a state of ecstasy.

“The very word ecstasy is being beside yourself... You’re in a different world.”

3. The “Sanity” Shift: Why the Mundane is an Illusion

Living for bread and butter is a form of insanity. We treat the 9-to-5 grind as “reality,” but failing to see the infinite power behind every moment is actually a break from what is real.

In Hebrew, the word for “sin” is chet , which literally means a “mistake.” It is a moment of temporary insanity where we lose our connection to the infinite because we think we are gaining something. In reality, we are simply losing our grip on the truth.

Walking through the world as if it were mundane is like taking “dolls seriously.” If you are talking to a doll and expecting a response, you have lost your mind. If you are walking through a universe of raging suns and DNA replication and feeling “bored,” you are just as out of touch.

Awe is the return to sanity. It is the recognition that the Almighty is on the phone and the world is charged with eternal majesty.

4. The Micro-Miracle: Finding Awe in a Ballpoint Pen

You do not need to chase a volcano to find awe; you only need to pay attention. Look at the pen in your hand. Science tells us it is a concentration of power that could destroy a city if unleashed. It is a swirling mass of electrons speeding at the speed of light, held together by the “weird magical power” of gravity.

When you write, you are leaving a “trail of electrons” on the paper, guided by an impulse from your brain—another set of electrons—that obeys your will. Consider the book you hold: a single seed can create a forest, and the DNA in your own body replicates itself to coordinate seven trillion cells, differentiating them into complex organs. When you analyze the world at this level, nothing is inert. Everything is a mind-boggling miracle hidden in plain sight.

5. Awe as a Practical Tool: Dealing with “Hassles” and Parents

Awe is a gearbox for the soul. Once you learn to use the “clutch,” you can harness this energy to navigate daily life with a different set of dimensions.

  • Blast Out of Ruts: When you are aggravated by “parental knocking” or daily delays, take a walk under the stars. Contemplate the distance. You cannot be petty when you are awed. You return not “starry-eyed,” but energized, able to say, “I’m sorry, that was a mistake,” because the conflict has shrunk against the backdrop of the eternal.
  • Positive Energy: Awe is a battery for performance. Before you study, work, or step up to the plate in a ballgame, plug into the wonder of your own existence. Wave that “set of electrons” that is your arm and hit it out of the park.
  • Human Reverence: We often look at technology—hunks of steel flying through the heavens—with more wonder than we look at people. But every human being is a “bolt of lightning” or a “potential atom bomb” of capability, created in the divine image. Treat every person you meet with the reverence due to a creature who could turn the world on its tail.

“You can’t be petty when you’re awed... You’re in a different world. It’s got different dimensions.”

6. The 20-Minute Perspective Shift (An Exercise)

Mastering awe requires practice, much like learning to drive. Use this exercise to witness the “3D shock of pleasure” that comes from a perspective shift.

  • Step 1: List your current priorities (fame, success, security). Now, interview yourself. Ask “Why do I want this?” for every item. If you want fame, why? To be a “big man”? Why? Keep digging until you find the transcendental desire beneath the surface.
  • Step 2: Spend 10 minutes in deliberate contemplation of the physical awe around you. Focus on the paper in front of you—the trail of electrons you are leaving, the impulses in your brain, and the fact that you are a living, breathing miracle of seven trillion cells.
  • Step 3: Re-write your priorities. Notice how the “petty” items have dissolved. When you plug into reality, your goals shift from seeking “marbles” to seeking the full potential of a human life.

7. Conclusion: Walking with Your Head in the Sky Mastering the tool of awe means you will never be bored, petty, or “stupid” again. It is a lifestyle of constant wonder, where you refuse to sell yourself short.

Imagine receiving a message from outer space. You would be obsessed with the sender—where they are and what they want. But the Creator of the universe is already “on the phone.” His message is startlingly simple: “I love you. I created you for pleasure. You have a divine potential.”

Are you going to pick up?

The goal is to walk through this life with your head in the sky and your feet firmly on the ground. When you do, you stop merely surviving the mundane and start inhabiting the miraculous.
